The legal document reads, in part:
"STEPHEN SEAMANS* of Alexandria, Jefferson, NY guardian of BETSEY, STEPHEN S.,
NATHANIEL, and ELIJAH S. BUTTERFIELD infant children and heirs at law of
ELIJAH B DEXTER CUSHING and POLLY CUSHING, his wife, the said POLLY CUSHING
being the widow of the said ELIJAH BUTTERFIELD deceased of the same place of
the first part...
"ELIJAH BUTTERFIELD deceased at the time of his death was seized in fee of all
the piece of land in the town of Alexandria, Jefferson, NY....
(detailed description) ".... application was made to the
HONORABLE HIRAM DENIS Chancellor of the 5th Circuit
for the sale of the said premises ....
" ELIJAH died 10 Feb. 1827 in Theresa, Jefferson, NY and is buried in the
Town of Alexandria.
*Stephen Seamans (Simmons) was an uncle of the orphaned children.
He was married to Elizabeth Butterfield who was a sister of ELIJAH'S father
Nathaniel.
